What do the top money makers use?

Written on August 15th 2007 at 8:44 pm by alex

I found a post from Darren at ProBlogger on webpronews.com with a very nice rundown of what type of advertisements the 30 most popular blogs run, how many, etc. While the article is a little old, it is very informative and may give you deeper insight into what systems might work for your website.

Noticeable Stats
1. All blogs in the top 30 have an income stream. Only one blog had no advertising or affiliate programs (it did have a donation button though).
2. The most popular Income Stream on these Blogs is Blogads - 23 of the top 30 have them.
3. The next most popular income streams were donation buttons and Amazon links (mainly to books).
4. Also popular were AdBrite text ads.
5. Only 8 of these blogs use AdSense.

While I'm sure more of the sites are using Google AdSense now, it is interesting to note how few popular websites were using it two years ago. So what is this mysterious "Blogads" company, and why aren't you using them?

Invitation Only!
Oh, that's why. To participate in Blogads, you need to be sponsored by a blogger in the network. If you don't know a sponsor, write signup@blogads.com and they'll notify you when a sponsor appears in your niche. Blogads sells spots on a monthly bases at a set rate (which means it is not a CPC program). The "average" blogger earns about $50 a month, while some of their top bloggers earn more than $5,000 a month. YouNeed2See will have a full review of Blogads in the coming days.

Donations
As stated above, the second most popular revenue source (next to Amazon) is a simple "Make a Donation" button (most likely) from PayPal. Why does it work? Unlike conventional advertising, this isn't an advertisement! It gives your readers an un-intrusive way to give you a few bucks for your thoughts and services, without having to click-fraud some company. You also tend to make more money per donation than you do with any other CPC program.

It's always good to really look at the websites of the people telling you how to make money. If they say program A is fantastic, but they only run program B and C on their website, there has to be a reason why, and it's probably related to money. Don't believe everything you read, trust what you see. - View comments...
