How to use StumbleUpon to gain new readers.

Written on August 16th 2007 at 3:03 pm by alex

StumbleUpon is a very underestimated source of, not only good content, but new readers for your website. StumbleUpon is a relatively new service compared to Digg and Reddit, but it's growing at an extremely rapid rate. In April they had 2.1 million users, today they have almost 3.2 million. That's about 250,000 new users every month with 4 million websites stumbled every day. Now do you see why it has such huge potential for you? So let's jump right in.

My Stumble Experience
Along with YouNeed2See I run a few other websites, but I'm going to be focusing on my photography website. I've only been running it for 2 months, and I have received 635,000 unique visits during that time. StumbleUpon accounted for 17% of that traffic, or 99,500 visits. The average visitor from StumbleUpon stayed on my photography website for 2.5 minutes, and viewed 5 different pages. Anybody who sees you can build almost 20% of all your traffic from one source in 2 months also sees that StumbleUpon, effectively used, is no joke!

"Organic" Stumble Traffic
The most common way for your website to end up on StumbleUpon is from one of your readers. If they really like the article you wrote they just have to click a single button to share it with the world. A few more people will be directed to your article, and based on their votes your article will either continue receiving new visitors (from up votes), or traffic will die off (from down votes). The less spammy your website looks, and the more quality content it has, the better it's chances are of receiving huge amounts of traffic from StumbleUpon. You may want to read these tips from ProBlogger for optimizing your website for StumbleUpon traffic.

Paid Stumble Traffic
StumbleUpon also offers website owners unique advertising opportunities. It works almost the same way, except you are guaranteed visitors at $0.05 a pop. Are 100 new visitors worth $5.00? In most cases, yes. Lets say that 5 of those 100 people like your website and give it an up-vote, that might just me enough momentum to bring 500 or 1000 more people to your website, now free of cost. As long as you have quality content, there are usually people who are ready to read it. As a StumbleUpon advertiser, you also get to choose who sees your website. You can filter by age, country (and state) location, and by hundreds of topics. So if you only want 18 - 21 year old females from the USA to see your site, you must be lonely. ProBlogger has a great article that runs over the pros and cons of advertising on StumbleUpon.

The Bottom Line
If you write quality articles, or post unique photos on your website, people will love you for it. And sometimes in return, they'll love your website as well. Once you have a few readers who use StumbleUpon regularly, you shouldn't have to pay (even if it's only $5.00) to get your website back on StumbleUpon over and over again. But for very new websites or websites with very little traffic, consider giving up $5.00 because that little investment could come back to you 10-fold if you play your cards right. - View comments...
