Silver Asian Carp are interesting creatures

Written on Monday, September 8th 2008 at 1:44 pm by alex

Silver Asian Carp have been in the news recently because if they're "attacks on people" in Arkansas. Really, people are playing on the lake, boating and enjoying their day. The Silver Asian Carp jump out of the water and pack a powerful punch when they hit you.

Seth Russell who lives in Crossett was cruising Lake Chicot on a large inner tube towed by a boat when a Silver Asian carp leaped from the water and smacked him in the face. Seth was knocked unconscious.

"He doesn't remember anything at all," the boy's mother, Linda Russell, said last week. "He was laughing, and the next thing he remembers, he is waking in a hospital."

Silver Asian Carp can grow to be 80 to 100 pounds. They're ravenous eaters, consuming up to 40 percent of their own body weight in plankton each day. And they're bullies, pushing out weaker, native species.

Silver Asian carp were first imported to the United States in the 1970s. Catfish farmers brought them here to remove algae and other suspended matter from their ponds.

Here is a video of some jumping Silver Asian Carp in the Illinois River.
